Looking Back - Looking Ahead
The writer of this piece is not a planner. She may have vague plans in her head but she is not apt to sit down with paper and pen and plot out any great measure of time in her life.
In fact, quite often she will write things on her calendar and then not turn the pages.
If I had been a planner would things have been different? Would I have started a job that paid $5 a week on July 31st 1960 and still be doing it 63 years later?
It certainly wasn’t the money that captivated me; I only took the $5 for a few weeks. After all, the next day, August 1st of that same year I started another job and it paid $1 an hour.
I considered myself a fortunate young woman to have so much money. Isn’t it funny how things change?
I did well in the job that paid $1 an hour and by the time I retired I was making a decent amount of money for a high school graduate who only ‘planned’ to work in an office.
But that other job, the one I still have, I guess there is no retirement, there has been a bit of down time, the venue has changed, but some day there will be a retirement but that date is known only by the One I work for.
There doesn’t seem to be very many of us left — doesn’t God make piano players any more?
The heart still soars and dips and glissandos but the fingers are getting bent and far less flexible than they were. I remember my grandma's bent fingers, she played the piano far better than I ever have, but she quit when her fingers wouldn’t do exactly what she wanted any more.
I keep moving forward, all He asks of me is my best. And even though my best isn’t as good as it was it is a gift from my God that I cheerfully use to worship and praise Him.
